Treat the Room First 

The most impactful upgrade you can make to a home vocal recording is not a new microphone. It is the room itself. 

Untreated rooms produce two problems for acapella recording. Hard surfaces (walls, floors, windows) reflect sound back into the microphone, creating a smeared, distant quality. Standing waves at low frequencies cause certain notes to sound boomy and others to sound thin. 

You do not need professional acoustic panels to fix this. The principle is to add soft, dense material that absorbs reflections.  

  • Practical options include heavy curtains hung on the walls, mattresses or blankets propped up around your recording spot, a closet stuffed with clothing, or a portable vocal booth shield placed behind the microphone.  
  • A walk-in closet, with clothes acting as natural absorption, is one of the best free home vocal booths available. 
  • Test your room by clapping in the recording position and listening for the echo. If you hear a noticeable bounce, the room needs more softening. Aim for a space where a clap sounds dead, not lively.

Mic Placement for Acapella 

Distance, angle, and height each shape the recorded sound. For acapella, the right placement matters more than for mix recording because every detail is exposed. 

Closer than 6 inches and you risk plosives and an exaggerated proximity-effect bass that will not sit well in a final master. Farther than 12 inches and you start capturing too much room. The sweet spot for most home acapella recording sits around 8 inches. 

Position the microphone so it points toward the singer’s mouth but slightly above or below it, not directly at the lips. This reduces plosives (the p and b bursts of air) and softens sibilance (the s and sh sounds). For acapella, both of these problems are amplified because there is no mix to hide them. 

Slightly above the mouth, angled down, tends to produce the cleanest tone with fewer plosives. Below the mouth, angled up, adds chest weight and can sound fuller. Try both. 

Mark the singer’s position with tape on the floor so they can return to it consistently between takes.

At 24-bit, even a vocal peaking at -20 dBFS has more than enough resolution and signal-to-noise ratio for a release-quality recording. Recording too low is fixable. Recording too high is not.
